1st International Conference. Numismatic History and Economy in Epirus during the Antiquity
The Archaeological Institute for Epirotic Studies, the 12th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, the University of Ioannina and the ‘Lydia Lithos. Society for the Study of Numismatics and Economic History’ in an effort to promote research on the historical past in the wider area of Epirus organized the 1st International Conference. Numismatic History and Economy in Epirus during the Antiquity, which took place at Ioannina from October 3rd to October 7th 2007.
The Conference was held in honour of Professor Peter Robert Franke, in recognition of his scholarly contribution to the history and the numismatic study of Epirus.
The period covered by the Conference extended from classical to imperial times and thematic areas focused on the coinages of ancient Epirus from Ambracia and Nicopolis to Southern Illyria (Coinages, Iconography, Prosopography, Metrology, Coin Circulation, Economy, Relations of Epirus with other areas, Roman Times and Late Antiquity, Coin Collections).

More than fifty papers and posters were presented in the Conference, while more than sixty scholars (from Greece, Italy, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America) participated in the conference sessions.
On October 5th a guided tour was offered to the conference participants who wished to visit the oracle of Dodona, religious centre of the Epirotes and prestigious panhellenic sanctuary.
On the last day of the Conference (October 7th) an excursion was launched to the renowned archaeological site of Actia Nicopolis.
The Proceedings of the Ioannina Conference will be published by ‘Lydia Lithos’ in the book series KERMA.
